THE CAN-A-POP STORY

by: Paul W Bates  3-08-07

It would be hard to imagine my surprise and delight when I received an E-Mail from Mrs. Lois Rogers stating that her husband, Bob Rogers had prepared a series of five scrap books that she would like to donate to the Museum.  It seems that the Rogers family had owned the Sheridan Brewery in Wyoming, and had developed a soda in the early 1950's called Can-A-Pop.  The scrap books chronicled the development of Can-A-Pop through some historically significant pictures.

For a history buff and a collector of soda cans this time period in the development of soda cans was significant, indeed.  It was not certain in the early 1950's that the consumer would even accept soda in a can.  The high pressures necessary for canning soda caused the cans to leak, and the acid in the drink imparted an unpleasant taste to the product.

Cone top cans, looking like a concave bottom brake fluid can, were introduced because they could be used on existing bottling lines while consumers made up their minds about soda in cans.  Less expensive and more compact containers called flat top cans, or punch top cans competed in the market place but required costly new canning machinery.

Those early pioneers in the business of soda in cans who choose the flat top can and developed the production lines to fill them were the true visionaries of the day.  Such was Bob Rogers and the saga of Can-A-Pop.

The pictures to follow have been extracted and reproduced from Bob's scrap books.

Many thanks Lois and Bob for allowing us to salvage this unique piece of history for many to enjoy in the future.
